One of the most interesting conversations I have had this year was with my favorite flight instructor who was bemoaning the loss of his girlfriend. They had a series of on-going arguments which revolved around his driving and perceived lack of proper anger management.

“The worst fight we had, which ended things, was so stupid,” he recalled. “I was driving after we had been flying together on a cross-country and she was clutching the dash shrieking that we were going to hit someone. Which of course wasn’t the case. It was the case that I was driving too aggressively. And, that I was driving too fast.

“Which of course made me drive even worse. She was right, but I was so angry that she would tell me what to do…now she has left me and I am so sad and alone. I feel so stupid.”

My young friend, my dear flight instructor, was so trained form birth to be aggressive, to be right, he simply couldn’t back down from what he knew was a ridiculous argument.

Like all pilots, he tends to drive really too fast after flying all day. I personally have scared the bejesus out of more than one passenger after losing any sense of appropriate…
