Reckoning

“Human beings are addicted to the hope of finding a final reckoning but intellectual humility requires we resist the temptation to assume the tools of the kind we now have are in principle sufficient to understand the universe as a whole.” (Thomas Nagel: Mind and Consciousness)

The quirky unexplainable coincidences of my personal existence present evidence so compelling as to place me in a submissive prayerful stance kissing the ground as I obviously haven’t a clue. About anything.

I find lightning strikes more likely than the synchronistic occurances of late. My novel pages appear in human form in front of me on the days that follow writing them. It is as if I have eerily summoned the spirits embodied on the page and called them to solidify before me. Interestingly enough they write better copy (the spirits in human form) and I have done several rewrites post their appearances that were significant improvements. I’m just grateful I write beach novels, not horror or true crime.

I’m not sure what to make of it and have taken to checking in with my adult children to be sure I simply haven’t gone mad.

Nagel always brings comfort and when I read his lines I felt much better…as I do know that truths echo throughout life forms.

But as Nagel relates so well: We humans are addicted to hope of finding a final reckoning. I’ll just have to wait it out, buckle my seat belt, let the cosmos unfold and make sure my books don’t have too many scary characters that perchance will come to life.
